    Description:

The game locks up or the system suffers from general instability from task switching (ALT-TAB).

    Solution:

Any switching between SWAT3:CQB and other programs running on the computer is discouraged. Switching between programs may cause SWAT3:CQB to become unstable. Launch the game without any other programs running on the PC. If lockups or instability occurs while task-switching, reboot the computer and run the game again.

If task switching was not done when the lockups occurred, use the following series of troubleshooting steps to try to eliminate any difficulties with SWAT3: CQB.

    1. Set Desktop Colors

Run the desktop in 16-bit (high) color when playing the game. To ensure the display is set to 16-bit color, click with the right-hand mouse button on the Windows desktop and choose PROPERTIES from the menu that pops up. Then, click on the SETTINGS tab from the Display Properties window that comes up. Change the color palette to 16-bit (high) color if it is not already set there. Then, click the OK button from the Display Properties box. If Windows prompts to restart the computer for the new settings to take effect, go ahead and restart.

    2. Close TSRs

Close down any programs that may be running in the background (Note: There may be programs that are loaded up automatically and are running on the computer without having been manually opened). In order to check, from the desktop, hold down the CTRL, ALT and DELETE buttons to bring up the CLOSE PROGRAM window. The only things necessary to have running in this list are EXPLORER and SYSTRAY. If other programs are in this list, highlight them individually and click on the END TASK button. Repeat these steps until only EXPLORER and SYSTRAY remain in the list.

    3. Verify Installation of DirectX6.1+ and Direct Media

DirectX6.1 (or higher) and DXMedia are required to run SWAT3:CQB and will by default be installed automatically during the installation. If both of them are not already installed on the computer, they will need to be installed. To install DirectX6.1, open the DIRECTX folder on the CD and run the DXSETUP.EXE file. To install DXMedia, open the DXMEDIA folder and then the X86 folder and run the DXMEDIASETUP.BAT file.

After installing DX6.1, whether or not it is prompted, restart the computer.

In most cases, installing DirectX6.1 will provide updated video and audio drivers. Regardless of the DX6.1 recommendations during the installation, Sierra strongly recommends the updating of video and all hardware drivers if they have not been recently updated. For a listing of compatible video drivers for the most common video cards please see the ReadMe file which can be accessed by going to START, PROGRAMS, SIERRA, SWAT3 and selecting the SWAT3 ReadMe; it will be in Section IV "GRAPHIC CARD SUPPORT".

    4. Run DirectX Diagnostic Tool / Update Drivers

a.) Make sure all drivers on the computer are DirectX compatible. To do this:

Click on the Start button, go to Find, and select Files and Folders. In the NAMED dialogue box, type ?DXDIAG.EXE? . Within the LOOK IN: dialogue box, ensure that the [C:] drive is selected and then click the FIND NOW button. After the file is found, double-click on the file name ?DXDIAG.EXE?) displayed in the larger box which appears below. This should bring up a DirectX Diagnostic Tool Window.

Click on each of the Display and Sound tabs and make sure all listed drivers are listed as Certified. This will be shown under the Drivers section on the upper right-hand side of each tab. Also, performance tests can be run on the drivers from the Display and Sound tabs. If any drivers are not certified or if there are any problems running the tests, contact the computer manufacturer to update the drivers.

b.) Regardless of the results, it may be beneficial to update the video and sound card drivers. The hardware manufacturer may have released newer drivers that improve performance/compatibility or, in some cases, the actual install of the drivers may suffer from some form of corruption.

To update the drivers, first, go to the system property window by double-clicking on the My Computer icon. Click on Properties, click on the Device Manager tab and click on the "+" symbol in front of display adapters (the video card should drop down) and the "+" symbol in front of sound, video and game controllers (the soundcard should drop down). After writing down the type and model of the card(s), contact the system vendor for recommendations as to where to go to obtain the best drivers for the card(s). Another option is to go to the card manufacturers' websites. To try to find their sites, use the following sites, which have most card manufacturers' websites listed:

    http://www.winfiles.com
    http://www.drivershq.com

Next, go to each card manufacturer's website and go to their Drivers section. Then select and download the driver with the most current date associated with the particular model card as listed within the device manager for the version of Windows (?95 or ?98) installed on the computer. (Note: It is a good idea to verify with the system vendor that the drivers which being downloaded are going to be the best for the system).

    5. Running the game from a Windows 95/98 System disk.

A system disk is a tool that can be used to resolve most conflicts. A system disk will free up more system resources and memory for the software. The system disk also creates a cleaner? environment which is ?or free of extra TSRs and utilities that can sometimes cause conflicts.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read all instructions before beginning this procedure.

    1.) Formatting the disk
Place a blank high-density diskette in the A: drive. Then, open the My Computer icon from the desktop and highlight the icon for Drive A:. Right-click on the icon and choose Format. In the resulting dialog box, make sure there are checks in the boxes for "Full" under FORMAT TYPE and "Copy System Files" under OTHER OPTIONS. Click on OK to start the process.

Once the disk is formatted and while still in My Computer, double-click on the icon for the C: drive. Look for the file called ?MSDOS.SYS? in the list of files. If it cannot be found, for Windows ?95: click on the View menu. Choose OPTIONS and then the VIEW tab. Make sure "Show all files" is checked and "Hide MS DOS file extensions" is NOT checked.

For Windows ?98: After clicking on the VIEW menu, go to FOLDER OPTIONS and then to the VIEW tab. Ensure that "Hide extentions for known file types" is unchecked and "Show all files" is checked.

After finding the MSDOS.SYS file, right-click on it and choose Send To 3 ? Floppy (A). After being prompted to replace an existing file, click on OK.

Boot up with the system disk at this point by going to the START menu and choosing SHUTDOWN and RESTART the Computer with the disk in the A: drive. If the computer has Windows '95/?98 drivers for all of its hardware, the system disk will load all the hardware drivers. If not, DOS mode drivers will need to be loaded manually. Our Windows ?95/?98 System Disk troubleshooting document contains detailed instructions for creating Windows ?95/?98 system disks without DOS mode drivers loading.

2.) Reboot the computer and restart the game Restart the computer with the disk in the A: drive by clicking Start, Shut Down, and Restart the computer. Follow the instructions in the game manual to start the game.
