Mainstream support for Windows XP Service Pack 2 will end on April 14, 2009, four years after its general availability.[45] As per Microsoft's posted timetable, the company will stop general licensing of Windows XP to OEMs and terminate retail sales of the operating system on June 30, 2008, 17 months after the release of Windows Vista.[46][47] However, an exception was announced on April 3, 2008, for OEMs installing to subnotebooks or UMPCs either until June 30, 2010, or one year after the availability of the next client version of Windows, code-named Windows 7 -- whichever date comes later.[48][49][50]
On April 14, 2009, Windows XP will begin its "Extended Support" period that will last for 5 years until April 8, 2014.[51]
