We got a confirmation of some details regarding the launch of a new mobile Pentium 4 family. According to our sources, the new CPU family targeted at the notebook market will be named Pentium 4-M. These CPUs will be built on a 0.13-micron Northwood die equipped with 512KB L2 cache. Like the existing Pentium 4 line, members of Pentium 4-M will use 400MHz Quad Pumped Bus.
The first Pentium 4-M CPUs are reported to be officially announced on March 4. That day Intel will introduce two models - 1.6GHz and 1.7GHz. The price per item in over-1000-piece quantities will be $418 (1.6GHz) and $508 (1.7GHz).
Parallel to the first Pentium 4-M CPUs Intel will launch a corresponding chipset, i845MP. This will be a mobile analogue to i845 with PC2100 DDR SDRAM support and with no integrated graphics core. The new i845MP will be prices at $41 per item in over-1000-piece quantities.
The main advantage of Pentium 4-M CPUs will be their comparatively low average power consumption, which won’t exceed 2W. This will be ensured by a bunch of technologies implemented in these processors: Enhanced Speedstep, Deep Sleep and Deeper Sleep. As a result, the real clock frequency of Pentium 4-M CPUs will vary all the time depending on the calculating load.
