Is there such a thing as Unlimited Bandwidth?
What Is Bandwidth?
There are different definitions but the one you need to know as to applied to webhosting is the following. As related to hosted websites, bandwidth applies to the amount of data that a client is allowed to transfer, at no additional cost, over the webhost's Internet connection.Technically speaking, bandwidth is the amount of data that is transferred through a network connection. In other words, you are using bandwidth everytime a file, such as HTML page, an image, or any information off the Internet is downloaded. These are then viewed on your computer.
Each of these individual files contain a certain amount of data. For example, if a file is 1 kilobyte in size and a thousand people access this file, then 1000 kilobytes have been transferred.
Here is a list of the terms used by webhosting companies to describe their bandwidth allowance as applied to their network connections to the Internet.
Maximum Dedicated Bandwidths*

14.4 Kbps V.32bis modem, V.17 fax
9600 bps modem speed circa 1980s
2400 bps modem speed circa 1980s
Units of Measurement
bit= smallest unit of digital information, i.e. ones & zeros
byte= a set of bits
Bps= bits per second
Kbps= kilobits per second =1000 bits per second
Mbps = Million bits per second =1,000,000 bits per second
Gbps = Gigabits per second = 1,000,000,000 (one billion) bits per second
Tbps = Terabits per second = 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion) bits per second
Is there a need for unlimited bandwidth?
Yes there is a need for some websites but there is really no such thing as unlimited bandwidth unless you are Bill Gates. It will depend on how many visitors your site will get a month and how large your files are.
Any webhost that offers unlimited bandwidth will usually have a little asterick and when you read that asterick, there will be a limit.
Webhosting companies cannot afford to give away unlimited bandwidth to sites like ebay.com for $20 per month. They count on their customers, on average, having less than 5 GB of traffic.
Webhosting.com offers unlimited bandwidth. This is from their website.
"Data Transfer / Hits - You have unlimited data transfer (or hits) on your virtual server. Any outward-bound traffic from your web site is considered data transfer. For example, each time a html file, image, or other element on your web page is loaded, data transfer is generated.
Each of our plans includes unlimited data transfer. WebHosting.Com does not host any "adult" or "warez" web sites."
Interland.com offers unmetered traffic for one of their more expensive plans at $399 per month. There is a note at the bottom of the page still, saying "You will not be charged if you go over your storage or transfer rate within one month (some restrictions apply). You will be given the following month to change to the appropriate plan. Any subsequent months will incur the necessary charges."
So you will end up paying for bandwidth one way or the other, either up front from the very beginning or later on, and you may get a large bill and have your site temporarily shut down. This has been the complaint of a few of our visitors. Then you try to deal with the webhost's billing department and have no luck.
Tip : Make sure that the domain name is registered under your name for all three positions, administrative, technical, and billing so that you can switch your domain name to another company if need be.
Unlimited bandwidth is a marketing gimmick to offer you something bigger. You usually do not come close to meeting the bandwidth limits of 4 to 5 GB. Of the 200 other websites on your server, the average bandwidth used is likely less than 1 GB per month.
They will restrict adult sites, MP3 sites, and warez sites to prevent high bandwidth requirements.
Tip : Ask your webhosting company what exactly unlimited bandwidth is. When do they start charging you?
